about

this song is about the summer I broke my wrist. obvi I'm not a virtuoso on any of these instruments, nor am I an expert mixing martial artist, but I really enjoyed the entire process, even if writing the lyrics took me nearly a full year. 🙄

thanks to Jake for helping me figure out the guitar part, and for his patience as I rewrote and rewrote this. thanks to Nicole for letting me use this photo of the late great Calvin. thanks to the Pail and Shovel Party for being so cool. and thanks to the main inspirations for this sound, among many many others: normal state - "the weather", bogues - "mulligan", brave bird - "t-minus grand gesture", and gleemer - "no goodbyes".

lyrics

lyrics:

the sample at the beginning is from "The Lotos-Eaters" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, as performed by Eric Portman.

("...and eyes grown dim with gazing on the pilot-stars.")

through rosy glasses I saw jackalopes where there were anchorites of Spring. but I traded Monk's for lotus flowers when I clipped my own wing.
still can't get past chapter 7, they never should have left. I'd rather spend the summer silent, lay low, stay home, and crumble undead.

but it's self-inflicted friendly fire, two beers in and I'm three sheets to the wind.

moon-eyed drunk enjoying nothingness, I'm a toothless lycanthrope. but I left flat ground for one second, and my vow of silence broke.
some nights I wish I were Saturn, quiet and alone, I'd feel impossible and watch the coruscating geometric thunderheads roll.

but it's thirteen percent oxygen, two deep breaths and I'm one foot in the grave.

God, like River's prayer, turn me to stone, just flintlock all my broken bones, and set them in the forest as a warning to marauders. but do not mistake the moss on me for signs of life.

June Gloom is crushing me again. in surfer's slang I'll never earn, my life's a mondo bummer. I'll bloom in November. until then, I'll hibernate, a blinking bear come Indian Summer.
